no because 3 time 4 is 12 and 5 minus 12 does not equal -3

No, because when you plug it in you get:
-3=3(4)-5
If you solve you will get:
-3=12-5
-3=7
You can plug it in, but it is not correct because -3 cannot and does not equal 7.
