Words formed by inflectional or derivational elements (prefix;infix;suffix) are usually considered new words, once adding them to a base or stem. If two words have the same root with different affixes, they are considered different words, meaning that affixes allow more words. On the other hand, Â simply modifying an existing word wouldn't have much impact, considering that not all modification of a root would actually be meaningful.
